WHY IT WAS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY BUILD

In 1865 , Edouard de Laboulaye, president of the French Society for the Fight against Slavery, proposed the construction of a statue representing freedom for the United States to commemorate the alliance of France and the United States during the American Revolution. Other reasons that led to this decision of Edouard de Laboulaye were to celebrate the centenary of the independence of the United States, the friendship of the country with France and as a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln and the abolition of slavery.

The geographical position of the Statue of Liberty at the entrance to the port of New York gave it a broader meaning over the years.

WHEN WAS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY BUILT ?

The Statue of Liberty was built by the French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi in France and took 9 years with ten hours of work and seven days of work per week. Then it was dismantled in 350 pieces and packed in 214 boxes to send it from France to New York. Although it was presented to the United States on July 4, it took 4 months to reassemble the statue in New York. Finally, on October 28, 1886 , the Statue of Liberty was officially inaugurated during a ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland.

In October 2019, the Statue of Liberty will be 133 years old

WHERE IS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY?

The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor in New York City, in the United States. The copper statue, a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel

The island itself has had quite a history: it was a quarantine station for smallpox victims in the 18th century, a summer home for the Earl of Cassils, a rental property, a place for Tory refugees, a lighthouse, and finally, a defensive fort.
